“An Acceptable Offering” A Fresh Look at 1 Peter 2:1-10
Pastor Gerald Murphy
1 Peter 2:1 (NKJV) Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking
What is Peter building on? Why is he confident we can lay aside all of these negative and even sinful attributes?
1 Peter 1:2-5 (NKJV)  Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance [b]incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
1 Peter 1:22-25 (NKJV) Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth [i]through the Spirit in [j]sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, 23 having been born again, not of [k]corruptible seed but [l]incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides [m]forever, 24 because “All flesh is as grass, And all [n]the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, And its flower falls away, 25 But the [o]word of the Lord endures forever.”Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.
When we believe the word of the Gospel, it TRANSFORMS us!
1 Peter 2:2 (NKJV) as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow [a]thereby, 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
When we TASTE the goodness and graciousness of God, we receive new appetites! We lose our appetite for the things of the world.
1 Peter 2:4 (NKJV) Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious
We never stop coming to Jesus the living STONE!
1 Peter 2:5 (NKJV) you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
Living stones: to live, breathe, be among the living (not lifeless, not dead). To enjoy real life, to have true life and worthy of the name active, blessed, endless in the kingdom of God
We are now accepted, and because of that our OFFERINGS are acceptable!
Ephesians 1:6 (NKJV) to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He [a]made us accepted in the Beloved.
Accepted: to grace, special honor, makes accepted, highly favored
Romans 12:1 (NKJV) I beseech[a] you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your [b]reasonable service.
1 Peter 2:6 (NKJV) Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, “Behold, I lay in Zion A chief cornerstone, elect, precious, And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.”
Because Jesus offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for us, we can now respond and offer ourselves as living sacrifices to serve the Lord.
We are free of shame, free of guilt and free to WORSHIP!
Hebrews 9:14 (NKJV) how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without [a]spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
Malachi 1:8-11 (NIV) When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?” says the LordAlmighty.
9“Now plead with God to be gracious to us. With such offerings from your hands, will he accept you?”—says the Lord Almighty.
10“Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would not light useless fires on my altar! I am not pleased with you,” says the Lord Almighty, “and I will accept no offering from your hands. 11My name will be great among the nations, from where the sun rises to where it sets. In every place incense and pure offerings will be brought to me, because my name will be great among the nations,” says the LordAlmighty.
The Lord was confident a pure offering would be lifted up to Him one day. Not just by Israel, but by every nation.
Only through Jesus is this now being made a reality!
1 Peter 2:7-8 (NKJV) Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who [b]are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone,” 8 and “A stone of stumbling And a rock of offense.” They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.
There is no gray area. We either fully receive Jesus Christ or we reject Him. Either Jesus is precious to us or He is an offense to us. We are either living obediently or we are living disobedient.
1 Peter 2:9-10 (NKJV) But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.
In Christ, YOU are chosen, royal, and special!
Remember your testimony and let it provoke praise! Remember when the mercy and love of God first touched your heart and let it stir up fresh praise!
Hebrews 13:15 (NKJV) Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.
Because of Jesus, we are now accepted and our offering of PRAISE is now acceptable!
